From Patna to Delhi: Nitish Kumar Eyes Rajya Sabha, Signs of Dissent in JDU and Possible Power Shift in Bihar Politics

A major shift appears to be unfolding in Bihar’s political landscape. After leading the state government for nearly two decades, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has decided to move to the Rajya Sabha. The decision has triggered intense political discussions across the state and has also sparked dissent within his party, Janata Dal (United).

The Chief Minister clarified that becoming a member of the Rajya Sabha had long been one of his political aspirations. He said it was his dream to be a member of both Houses of the Bihar Legislature as well as both Houses of the Indian Parliament. Thanking the people of Bihar, he said the public had repeatedly placed their trust in him over the past two decades and given him the opportunity to serve as Chief Minister multiple times.

A New Phase After Two Decades in Power

Nitish Kumar is considered one of the most influential leaders in Bihar politics. He has served multiple terms as Chief Minister and built his political identity around issues such as development, road infrastructure, education, and law and order.

In the recent 2025 Bihar Legislative Assembly election, the National Democratic Alliance secured a majority, following which Nitish Kumar once again took oath as the Chief Minister. However, his decision to move to the Rajya Sabha is now being seen by political observers as the beginning of a “new innings” in his political career.

Internal Opposition and Workers’ Protest

Nitish Kumar’s decision has reportedly made several leaders and workers of the party uncomfortable. A large number of supporters gathered outside his official residence in Patna, raising slogans and urging him to continue as Chief Minister.

Many workers argued that the people of Bihar had given him a mandate to lead the state as Chief Minister, and therefore his move to Delhi would not be appropriate. Some supporters even suggested that the Rajya Sabha seat should instead be given to his son, Nishant Kumar.

Speculation Over BJP–JDU Power Equation

Political circles are also abuzz with speculation that if Nitish Kumar moves to the Rajya Sabha, a leadership change in Bihar would become almost inevitable. This has intensified discussions over who might become the next Chief Minister.

Some analysts believe that such a move could also alter the balance of power between Bharatiya Janata Party and Janata Dal (United) within the ruling alliance.

In the recent assembly elections, the BJP emerged as the largest party in the state assembly, while JDU remained a key partner in the coalition. As a result, debates around power-sharing arrangements and leadership dynamics have grown stronger.

Speculation Over a Successor

If Nitish Kumar does move to the Rajya Sabha, discussions about the next leadership in Bihar have already begun. Political corridors are buzzing with speculation that his son, Nishant Kumar, could enter active politics, although there has been no official confirmation so far.

A Turning Point for Bihar Politics

Political observers say that if Nitish Kumar steps down as Chief Minister to join the Rajya Sabha, it could mark a significant turning point in Bihar’s politics. A leader who remained at the centre of the state’s power structure for nearly twenty years moving from Patna to Delhi would not merely be a personal political decision — it could reshape the state’s power structure, coalition dynamics, and future leadership.

For now, political attention across Bihar remains focused on how this decision unfolds in the coming days and whether it leads to a new phase in the state’s political landscape.
