The Maulana Azad National Urdu University Alumni Fraternity (MAF) has expressed deep concern and disappointment over the Bihar government’s decision not to allocate even a single Assistant Professor post for the Urdu subject in the 208 newly established degree colleges being set up under the “Seven Resolves-3 (2025-30)” scheme.
In a statement issued by the organization, MAF said that Bihar is among the important states where Urdu enjoys the status of a second official language and has a long-standing academic tradition in universities and colleges across the state. Despite this, the complete exclusion of Urdu from the newly established degree colleges amounts to injustice towards the language, its students, researchers, and qualified candidates.
MAF stated that this is not merely an issue of one language, but a matter of equal educational opportunities, linguistic representation, and constitutional rights. According to the organization, every year a large number of students earn undergraduate, postgraduate, NET, and PhD degrees in Urdu. Ignoring the subject entirely in new appointments could severely affect the future of thousands of qualified youth and researchers.
The organization further stated that the National Education Policy (NEP 2020) strongly emphasizes the promotion and preservation of mother tongues and regional languages. In such a scenario, excluding Urdu entirely goes against the very spirit of the new education policy. MAF demanded that adequate Assistant Professor posts for Urdu be created in the newly established degree colleges and that the decision be reviewed immediately.
MAF also said that Urdu has been an integral part of Bihar’s shared cultural, literary, and social heritage. Therefore, ensuring its proper representation in educational institutions is both a constitutional and moral responsibility of the government.
The organization urged the Bihar government and the Education Department to initiate meaningful dialogue with Urdu teachers, academicians, and representatives of student organizations so that a fair and inclusive solution can be reached.
In conclusion, MAF warned that if the issue is not addressed seriously, dissatisfaction and unrest among Urdu students, teachers, and social organizations across the state may intensify in the coming days.
