Gauri Lankesh Murder Accused Shrikant Pangarkar Wins Maharashtra’s Jalna Municipal Election

Shrikant Pangarkar, accused in the 2017 murder of senior journalist Gauri Lankesh, has won the Ward-13 seat in the Jalna in Maharashtra Municipal Corporation elections as an independent candidate. The result has sparked intense political and social debate across the country.

During the municipal vote count, Pangarkar secured a total of 2,661 votes, defeating his closest rival, BJP candidate Ravasahab Dhoble, who received 2,477 votes. Pangarkar won by a margin of 184 votes.

Immediately after the results were announced, Pangarkar celebrated his victory with his supporters. Photos and videos of the procession and celebrations have gone viral on social media, drawing widespread criticism and concern from media, civil society groups, and political circles.

Gauri Lankesh, a prominent journalist and social activist, was shot dead outside her residence in Bengaluru on September 5, 2017. Her murder sparked nationwide outrage over freedom of information and political dissent.

Pangarkar remains an accused in the case, which is still pending in court. He was granted bail by the Karnataka High Court in September 2024, but charges against him remain.

Earlier, Pangarkar had served as a member of the Jalna Municipal Council under Akhand Shiv Sena. After being denied a party ticket in 2011, he joined the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti. In 2024, he briefly joined Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) during the Maharashtra Assembly elections, but his appointment was later rescinded following criticism.

Additionally, in 2018, Pangarkar was implicated in the Nalasopara arms seizure case, facing multiple charges under various laws.

Analysts and human rights groups have expressed concern, arguing that allowing accused individuals to contest and win elections raises serious questions about democratic values and the justice system. They warn that it could undermine public faith in both the legal process and democratic institutions. However, Pangarkar and his supporters maintain that no conviction has been made yet and insist they were voted for as an innocent individual.
