Chirag Paswan’s LJP (Ram Vilas) Eyes Beyond Bihar: Election Preparations in Bengal and Assam, Strategy Accelerates to Become a National Party

Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) national president and Union minister Chirag Paswan is aiming to expand beyond Bihar politics. Following a strong performance in the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections, the party has initiated its electoral strategy for West Bengal and Assam. The move is intended to give the party a national identity and strengthen the NDA alliance.

The party has appointed Khagaria MP Rajesh Verma as the election in-charge for Bengal and Assam. His responsibilities include organizational expansion, liaising with local leaders, and preparing reports on electoral prospects. Sources indicate that LJP (Ram Vilas) will field candidates in selective and strategic constituencies rather than contesting extensively, aiming to assess both vote share and organizational strength.

Chirag Paswan’s strategy focuses on Dalits, Mahadalits, and other backward classes. Using its social base in Bihar as a model, the party seeks to establish political influence among these groups in Bengal and Assam as well. LJP (Ram Vilas) aims not only to win seats but also to establish itself in national politics.

Raju Tiwari, state president of LJP (Ram Vilas), said, “Our founder, Ram Vilas Paswan, dreamed of making the party a national force. By fielding candidates in West Bengal and Assam, we are working toward realizing that vision. Our goal is to strengthen our position in other states through strong electoral performance and alliance support.”

Political analyst Praveen Bagi noted that smaller Bihar parties contest elections in other states to gain recognition at the national level. He added, “LJP (Ram Vilas) does not have a strong base outside Bihar, but the party is trying. An alliance with the BJP can enhance its strength.”

To achieve national party status, a party must win at least 2% of Lok Sabha seats in three states or secure 6% of votes in four states. Currently, only six parties are recognized as national parties: BJP, INC, BSP, CPI(M), CPI, and AAP.

In the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections, LJP (Ram Vilas) contested 29 seats, winning 19. In the 2023 Nagaland Assembly elections, the party won two seats, and in Jharkhand, it won one seat. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, LJP (Ram Vilas) contested five seats and won all, securing a total vote share of 6.47%.

This national expansion is a strategic step following LJP (Ram Vilas)’s success in Bihar. The party is preparing to play a significant role in India’s national political landscape.
