The Bihar State Human Rights Commission (BSHRC) has taken a serious stance on the suspicious death of a student preparing for NEET at Shambhu Girls’ Hostel in Patna. The Commission has issued a notice to the Patna SSP, directing him to submit a detailed report within eight weeks. The next hearing is scheduled for April 22, 2026.
The deceased student, a resident of Jehanabad district, was staying at the hostel for NEET preparation. She was found unconscious on January 6, 2026, and succumbed to her condition on January 11, 2026 during treatment. Preliminary reports had suggested the possibility of suicide or drug overdose.
However, post-mortem and FSL examinations revealed injuries and suspicious marks on the body, indicating that the case might involve serious criminal elements rather than being a routine death. The family has demanded a fair investigation, and the matter has also come under the purview of the POCSO Act, highlighting its gravity.
The Bihar government has ordered a CBI probe. Investigators are collecting DNA samples, CCTV footage, and other evidence. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed, and two police officers have been suspended. Under CBI supervision, DNA samples from six suspects have been collected.
From the outset, the family and the student community have alleged sexual harassment and murder. Protests demanding fair investigation and strict punishment have taken place in Patna and other cities. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has also demanded safety measures for doctors.
The Human Rights Commission has emphasized the need for a thorough and impartial investigation, warning that any negligence in the probe could lead to action against the officials concerned.
The next hearing on the case is set for April 22, 2026. The CBI investigation is expected to identify the accused and determine further legal action. The case has become a focal point of national debate on student safety, impartial justice, and administrative accountability.
