The sixth two-day National Representatives’ Council meeting of the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) was held on January 20 and 21, 2026, at the Indiana Convention Centre in Mangaluru. Representatives from all states across the country participated in the meeting, reflecting the party’s expanding organisational presence at the national level.
The council was inaugurated by National Vice President Mohammed Shafi with the hoisting of the party flag. The proceedings were conducted by National General Secretary Mohammed Ashraf, while National General Secretary Sitaram Khoiwal welcomed the delegates.
In his presidential address, National Vice President Mohammed Shafi spoke in detail about the current political situation in the country, the challenges facing democratic institutions, and the party’s role in safeguarding constitutional values. The term working report was presented before the council by National General Secretaries Mohammed Ilyas Tambey, Sitaram Khoiwal, Yasmeen Farooqui, and P. Abdul Majeed Faizi, while the political report was presented by Mohammed Ilyas Tambey. After detailed deliberations, both reports were unanimously adopted.
During the meeting, extensive discussions were held on issues such as the alleged rise of authoritarian tendencies in the country, weakening of federalism, communal polarisation, misuse of investigative agencies, and the party’s future political and organisational strategy.
Subsequently, elections were held for the new National Executive Committee. The process was conducted under the supervision of returning officers Maulana Ubaidullah Khan Azmi (former Member of Parliament and Vice President of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board) and Advocate K. P. Mohammed Sharif. Following a democratic process, a 45-member National Executive Committee was constituted.
In the meeting of the newly elected National Executive, incarcerated leader M. K. Faizi was once again elected as the National President of the Social Democratic Party of India. The party described this as a symbol of collective resistance against political vendetta and a reaffirmation of its commitment to democratic values. Mohammed Shafi was appointed Acting President, while Sheikh Mohammed Dahlan Baqavi and Sitaram Khoiwal were appointed National Vice Presidents.
The meeting also announced the names of National General Secretaries, Secretaries, and other office-bearers, and constituted a new National Secretariat.
A total of 18 resolutions on key national and international issues were passed at the National Representatives’ Council. These included condemnation of the arrest of National President M. K. Faizy and the alleged political misuse of investigative agencies; a demand for the immediate withdrawal of the SIR process; repeal of the UAPA or fundamental amendments to it; release of undertrial prisoners who have been incarcerated for long periods; protection and empowerment of minority communities; a caste-based census; a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP) for farmers; protection of the Places of Worship Act; and safeguarding federalism.
Other resolutions addressed electoral reforms, the formation of an Equal Opportunity Commission, employment generation, prioritising rural development, urgent action on climate change, and support for a two-state solution for Palestine.
The two-day National Representatives’ Council concluded with a resolve to strengthen democratic struggles, expand organisational outreach, and defend the Constitution, social justice, and secular democracy.
