Attempt to encroach on Karbala land in Pratapgarh, Uttar Pradesh; Vijay Maurya among four arrested

A case of an alleged attempt to forcibly encroach upon Karbala land, associated with religious faith, has come to light in the Ranjitpur Chilbila area of Pratapgarh district in Uttar Pradesh. Police have arrested four people, including Vijay Maurya, in connection with the incident. The episode led to tension in the area, though the administration said the situation is under control.

The incident occurred on Tuesday morning near the Chilbila flyover along the Ayodhya–Prayagraj National Highway, when a group led by Vijay Maurya arrived at the site with two JCB machines and began levelling the land. Local residents claim that the land is linked to the Karbala, where religious rituals are performed during Muharram.

Between around 9:30 am and 10 am, as news spread that JCB machines were operating on the land, panic broke out in the surrounding areas. Members of the Karbala Committee, including women, rushed to the spot and lodged their protest. The protesters alleged that they were assaulted, threatened, and that women were subjected to misbehaviour, further aggravating the situation.

Upon receiving information, a heavy police force led by Circle Officer (City) Prashant Raj Hudda, Additional Superintendent of Police (East) Shailendra Lal, Sub-Divisional Magistrate (Sadar) Nancy Singh, and Kotwali Nagar station in-charge Mohammad Ibrar Ansari reached the site. Police personnel from Dehat Kotwali, Kohandaur, and Antu police stations were also deployed. The police brought the situation under control and seized both JCB machines.

Based on a written complaint filed by Muharram Committee president Haider Ali, a case was registered against the accused under charges related to assault, rioting, hurting religious sentiments, disturbing communal harmony, and outraging the modesty of women. Following this, police arrested Vijay Maurya, Vishal Maurya, Anoop Srivastava, and Ankit Jaiswal.

According to administrative officials, the dispute is old and has been pending in court for a long time over the burial of tazias between the Karbala Committee and a local resident, Ram Shiromani Pandey. The issue has triggered tension on several occasions in the past, requiring administrative intervention.

The district administration said that while the situation remains sensitive, it is fully under control. Additional police forces have been deployed in the area to prevent any untoward incident. Traffic on the flyover was affected for some time due to the incident but was later restored to normal.
