Imam’s Presence of Mind Before Dawn Prayer Saves 7 Lives; Emergency Call Made Through Mosque Loudspeaker

A major tragedy was averted early Tuesday in Assam’s Sribhumi district when a car lost control on a national highway and slid off the road into a pond. The passengers inside were asleep as the vehicle began sinking, but the swift response of a local mosque imam helped save all seven people onboard.

The incident occurred just before the dawn prayer. Maulana Abdul Basit, the imam of the nearby Jama Masjid, heard the loud crash and immediately sensed the gravity of the situation. Without wasting a moment, he used the mosque’s loudspeaker to alert the entire village and call for help.

Over the microphone, Maulana announced that a vehicle had fallen into the pond and urged villagers to rush to the spot. His call for help prompted residents to assemble quickly and run toward the site.

Working together, locals managed to pull the car from the water and rescue all seven passengers within minutes. By then, the vehicle was almost fully submerged, and the shut windows were making the situation increasingly dangerous for those trapped inside.

“I saw the car’s headlights underwater and realized there was no time to waste,” Maulana Abdul Basit said. “That’s when I used the loudspeaker to seek help.”

He added, “This was about humanity. In that moment, religion or identity did not matter — saving lives did.”

The imam’s timely action and the community’s rapid response are being widely praised.

The incident serves as a reminder that compassion and humanity transcend religion, boundaries, and identity.
