Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and senior Congress MP Rahul Gandhi expressed serious concern over attacks on democratic institutions in India during a dialogue program at EIA University in Colombia. He described these attacks as the biggest threat to the country and said democracy is under assault from all directions.
Rahul Gandhi said, “India has multiple religions, traditions, and languages. The democratic system accommodates all of these, but currently, democracy is facing widespread attacks. This poses a threat to India’s diversity and prosperity.”
Answering a question on India’s global role, Gandhi said, “India, with a population of 1.4 billion, has immense potential, but its structure is completely different from China. China has a centralized and uniform system, whereas India has multiple languages, cultures, traditions, and religions. India’s system is far more complex.”
He added that India has much to offer the world and expressed optimism about its future. At the same time, he acknowledged, “The Indian framework has its flaws and risks that need to be overcome. The biggest risk is the attacks on democracy.”
Addressing engineering students, he said that India is a neighbor to China and a close partner of the United States. “We are right at the spot where global powers are clashing.”
Speaking about the United States, he noted that President Donald Trump’s polarization campaign mainly targets the unemployed. Gandhi further said, “Despite economic growth, we are unable to generate sufficient employment because our economy is service-based and we are unable to scale production.”
Rahul Gandhi’s remarks drew a sharp reaction from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). BJP leaders called his statements baseless and damaging to the country’s image.
Experts suggest that Gandhi’s comments could intensify the ongoing debate over the state of democracy in India.
