The Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) Gujarat has approached the Gujarat High Court seeking the inclusion of stringent provisions in the FIR registered against Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Dharmendra Bhavani.
SDPI alleges that Bhavani delivered inflammatory and derogatory remarks during a tribute event held following the death of a student in the “Seven Day School” case. His speech reportedly included offensive comments against Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), the Holy Quran, and Hadith. Additionally, he addressed the Muslim community as “jihadis” and publicly displayed swords. The organization claims that such acts disturb communal harmony and create an atmosphere of fear and tension in society.
The party also accused the police administration of double standards. According to SDPI, despite filing complaints at multiple police stations, no FIR was registered under stringent sections. Eventually, an FIR was lodged at Khokhra Police Station under relatively minor provisions, such as Section 299 of the IPC, which allowed the accused to secure bail easily. The organization compared this action to the case of Maulana Salman Azhari, who faced strict action merely for reciting a poem.
In its petition, SDPI has requested the court to add stringent provisions against Bhavani for spreading hatred, promoting communal animosity, and disturbing public peace.
State President Mufti Abdullah stated that SDPI has full faith in the Constitution and judiciary and seeks equal legal treatment for all citizens. He urged the community to maintain peace and refrain from any unlawful actions.
All eyes are now on the High Court hearing. It remains to be seen how the judiciary approaches this sensitive issue.
