A shocking revelation has come to light from Dhaka Assembly constituency in Bihar, where attempts were reportedly made to remove nearly 78,000 Muslim voters from the electoral rolls by falsely declaring them as illegal citizens. This information has emerged from an investigation by The Reporters’ Collective, which claims that these voters were targeted through fake petitions filed in the name of the BJP.
According to the investigation, BJP booth-level agents submitted written petitions to the District Election Officer and the Chief Electoral Officer of Bihar, claiming that these Muslim voters did not possess valid Indian citizenship documents. One of these petitions was filed on the BJP state headquarters’ letterhead, while another was submitted in the name of the personal assistant of the Dhaka MLA. The petitions listed 78,384 voters along with their EPIC numbers.
The Dhaka Electoral Registration Officer stated that the documents of these voters would be verified during the regular verification process. However, he did not provide any official confirmation of the receipt of these petitions.
Dhaka Assembly constituency is known for its significant Muslim and Yadav voter population. The area has traditionally been a stronghold of the Congress and later the RJD. In the 2020 Assembly elections, BJP’s Pawan Kumar Jaiswal defeated the RJD candidate by a margin of 10,114 votes.
Experts say that such large-scale attempts to remove names from voter lists interfere with the democratic process and violate voters’ rights. The Election Commission should take these petitions seriously and take strict action against those responsible.
This development has sparked political turmoil, as it could have a direct impact on the upcoming electoral process in the Dhaka constituency.
