“US Submarine Sinks Iranian Warship in Indian Ocean; SDPI’s Sitaram Khoiwal Raises Serious Questions on Modi Government’s Security and Diplomatic Failures”

The sinking of the Iranian warship IRIS Dena by a US submarine in the Indian Ocean has raised serious questions not only about international security but also about India’s maritime policy. Sitaram Khoiwal, National Vice President of the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), condemned the attack, saying it exposed a grave failure of the Modi government to protect India’s sovereignty and regional stability.

The incident occurred while the Iranian vessel was returning home after participating as a guest in the Milan 2026 International Fleet Review and naval exercises held in Visakhapatnam between February 18–25. The attack, which took place in international waters near Sri Lanka, reportedly killed at least 87 sailors, with dozens still missing. Emergency messages received in the morning and confirmation of the strike by US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on March 4 indicate that the action was premeditated, flagrantly violating international norms.

Khoiwal stated, “Even while the Modi government has been strengthening strategic ties with Washington through the Quad, it failed to ensure the security of Iranian ships. An incident so close to our maritime borders shows that India’s maritime interests are being influenced by foreign powers.” He also questioned whether Indian intelligence agencies had prior knowledge of the attack, and if so, why that information was not shared.

The SDPI warned that the attack poses a serious threat to India’s energy security and regional peace. Iran has long been a key oil and energy partner for India, and such military actions could escalate tensions across the region.

Khoiwal demanded an immediate parliamentary inquiry into the incident. “India must adopt an independent and clear policy to safeguard its sovereignty and regional peace. The blood of the sailors reminds us of the consequences of prioritizing foreign policies over national interests,” he said.
