Amid rapidly changing political developments in Tamil Nadu, actor-turned-politician Vijay’s party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has finally crossed the majority mark. Following the support of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and other allies, the TVK camp now has the backing of 118 Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs), which is considered the magic number required to form a government in the 234-member Assembly.
This development has triggered a major political shift in Tamil Nadu politics. For decades, power in the state has alternated between the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), but this time TVK, contesting strongly for the first time, surprised everyone by winning 108 seats and emerging as the largest party in the state. However, due to one vacant seat, its effective strength was considered 107, making support from allies essential for Vijay.
First, the Congress announced support from its five MLAs. After that, the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] also declared outside support to Vijay. Later, VCK also decided in favour of TVK, and subsequent political support helped TVK cross the majority mark.
According to the current equation, TVK’s 107 effective MLAs, Congress’ 5, VCK’s 2, CPI’s 2, and CPI(M)’s 2 have together ensured a majority for Vijay’s alliance. This support is being seen not just as a numbers game, but also as the possible beginning of a new “secular and anti-BJP front” in Tamil Nadu politics.
In a joint press conference in Chennai, leaders of the Left parties clearly stated that their support is aimed at “stopping communal forces and protecting Tamil Nadu’s rights.” They clarified that they will not join the government but will extend outside support, and will continue cooperation on issues related to state rights and federal structure.
Meanwhile, the role of Governor Rajendra Arlekar has also come under controversy. Vijay had already staked claim to form the government, but the Governor reportedly asked for a clear support letter from 118 MLAs. This led to protests by Congress and TVK workers in several places, accusing the Governor of “delaying the mandate.”
With the majority now secured, Vijay is expected to meet the Governor again soon. According to political sources, preparations for government formation and oath-taking are underway. If everything proceeds as planned, Tamil Nadu may witness, for the first time, a government led by an actor who, in his very first electoral attempt, has challenged the decades-long dominance of Dravidian political giants.
Tamil Nadu has a long history of cinema-politics connections. Leaders like C.N. Annadurai, M. Karunanidhi, M.G. Ramachandran, and J. Jayalalithaa successfully transitioned from films to politics. Vijay is now being seen as the latest face in that tradition.
Political analysts believe that Vijay’s popularity among youth, urban voters, and first-time voters has reshaped Tamil Nadu’s traditional political landscape. All eyes are now on when the Governor will formally invite Vijay to form the government and how TVK will shape its first administration.
