SDPI slams CAPF deployment after West Bengal elections, raises serious questions over Election Commission’s neutrality

The Social Democratic Party of India has raised serious objections to the deployment of central forces and the role of the Election Commission following the West Bengal Assembly elections. The party described it as a matter of concern for the democratic process and the federal structure.

The party’s National Secretary, Ya Mohiuddin, said in a statement that Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s announcement that Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) will remain deployed in West Bengal for 60 days after the elections reflects political intent. According to the Social Democratic Party of India, the authority of the Election Commission of India is limited to ensuring free and fair polling, which applies only until the declaration of results.

The party alleged that making such a statement on the last day of campaigning was an attempt to influence voters and project the power of the central government. It also said that remarks describing opposition workers as “goons” and warnings of post-election action affect the electoral environment and raise questions about neutrality.

The Social Democratic Party of India also objected to the appointment of Ajay Pal Sharma as police observer in South 24 Parganas district. The party stated that Sharma, known for his aggressive policing style during Yogi Adityanath’s tenure in Uttar Pradesh, could create an atmosphere of fear and pressure rather than ensuring neutrality.

The party further alleged that incidents such as openly warning a candidate’s family raise serious questions about the impartiality of the Election Commission. It believes that appointing officers from BJP-ruled states deepens suspicions of bias in the electoral process.

The party has demanded that the Election Commission clarify the duration, powers, and command structure of the central forces’ deployment after May 4. It also called for ensuring that all observers function in a completely impartial manner.

In conclusion, the Social Democratic Party of India said that democracy can remain strong only when central agencies are not used as tools of political pressure. The party appealed to all democratic forces to come forward to protect the federal structure and the sanctity of the electoral process.
