The Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) has demanded immediate action from the Election Commission of India against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accusing him of allegedly making communal statements.

SDPI National General Secretary Muhammad Ilyas Thumbe strongly condemned the recent remarks, stating that Sarma’s comment that “Hindus in Assam are refugees, while Muslims are infiltrators” is divisive and has the potential to influence the election atmosphere.

According to Thumbe, such statements aim to polarize voters on religious lines and portray a particular community in a negative and politically isolated manner. He said that this kind of language during elections raises serious concerns about the fairness of the democratic process.

He further alleged that repeated use of terms like “infiltrators” without clear government data creates fear and distrust in society. He also claimed that recent eviction drives and reports related to voter lists indicate possible misuse of administrative processes.

The SDPI has urged the Election Commission to take cognizance of the matter and take strict action to ensure the impartiality of the electoral process and to prevent any political leader from influencing voters on religious grounds.

Thumbe stated that protecting the spirit of the Constitution and democratic values is the responsibility of the Election Commission, warning that a delay in action could further increase social polarization.

Political reactions are expected to intensify over the issue, although no official response has been issued by the concerned party so far.
