“NIA Issues Notice to Student Leader Abhishek; CASR Calls Move Latest in Series of Harassment”

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has issued a notice to Abhishek, a student of Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak, and president of the student organization Chatra Ekta Manch, under the “Lucknow Conspiracy Case.” The move has been strongly condemned by Campaign Against State Repression (CASR), which described it as the latest instance of harassment targeting students and social activists.

CASR stated that the notice against Abhishek has been issued without evidence and on vague charges. The organization termed it an attack on academic freedom and democratic rights, warning that such actions increase the risk of criminalizing peaceful student movements and social activism.

The organization also recalled that in July 2025, Priyanshu Kashyap, a former Delhi University student and activist of the Delhi General Mazdoor Front (DGMF), was arrested in the same case. CASR described the action against Priyanshu as part of a broader effort at political suppression and control over social movements.

CASR has outlined five key demands from the government:

1.Immediate withdrawal of the notice issued against Abhishek.

2.Immediate release of Priyanshu Kashyap and other arrested individuals.

3.Assurance that students and activists are not penalized for exercising democratic rights.

4.Protection of university autonomy.

5.Creation of a safe and independent environment for student and social movements.

Expressing solidarity with Abhishek, Priyanshu, and Chatra Ekta Manch, CASR called for the defense of peaceful protest and democratic freedoms. The organization also announced a campaign against state repression in collaboration with over 40 student and social organizations, including AIRSO, AISF, APCR, ASA, BASF, BSM, and Bhim Army.

CASR emphasized that universities should serve as spaces for free thought and debate—not arenas for punishing dissenting opinions.
