Meerut Doctor Detained Over Babri Masjid Video Post; Police Cite Law and Order Concerns

A Muslim woman doctor from Mawana town in Meerut district of uttarpradesh was briefly detained and booked after allegedly posting a social media video related to the Babri Masjid demolition anniversary, police officials confirmed.

The accused, Dr Sheeba Khan, an Ayurvedic practitioner (BAMS), was taken into custody from her clinic in Abdullapur as part of a preventive action aimed at maintaining public order. Authorities said she was later released on a personal bond after being produced before a magistrate.

According to the police, the action followed heightened surveillance of online platforms on December 6, a date considered sensitive due to the anniversary of the 1992 demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya. During this monitoring, an edited audio-video clip shared by Dr Khan allegedly came to the attention of security agencies.

Mawana Station House Officer Poonam Jadon stated that the content was perceived by the authorities as capable of disturbing communal harmony. A formal complaint was subsequently lodged, leading to the registration of a case under Section 196 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, which deals with promoting enmity between groups, and Section 67 of the Information Technology Act related to objectionable online content.

Sub-Divisional Magistrate Santosh Kumar Singh said the doctor was detained under preventive provisions to avert any potential breach of peace. “She was produced before the court and released after furnishing a personal bond,” the SDM said.

Officials added that the video has been sent for technical analysis to determine its origin, editing, and intent. Further legal action, they said, will depend on the outcome of the examination.

December 6 is marked every year as a sensitive day across Uttar Pradesh, with enhanced security measures and close monitoring of social media to prevent the spread of content that could trigger communal tension.
