Coordinated militant attacks shake power in Mali: Defence Minister General Sadio Camara killed; suicide attack hits military stronghold in Kati; multiple sites targeted in Bamako, Gao, Kidal, and Sevare as JNIM–FLA alliance deepens security crisis

West African country Mali has been pushed toward severe instability following widespread and well-coordinated militant attacks. Mali’s Defence Minister and a key pillar of the military government, Sadio Camara, was killed in these attacks, dealing a major blow to the country’s security system and power structure.

High-profile target attacked in Kati

The attacks began on Saturday when General Camara’s residence in the military town of Kati, located about 15 kilometers from the capital Bamako, was targeted with a suicide car bomb. Kati is considered the nerve center of Mali’s military power—it was from here that the coups of 2020 and 2021 were planned and executed. The ability of attackers to penetrate such tight security highlights serious lapses in the country’s defense system.

According to local sources, heavy gunfire followed the explosion, and clashes between security forces and attackers continued for several hours. General Camara was critically injured in the attack and later succumbed to his injuries.

Simultaneous attacks across multiple cities

The violence was not limited to a single location. Militant groups simultaneously targeted several strategic sites. In addition to Bamako, attacks were reported in the northern cities of Gao and Kidal, as well as in the central city of Sevare, where military bases and government installations came under fire.

In Kidal and Gao—longstanding centers of rebellion and instability—residents reported hearing gunfire and explosions well into Sunday, indicating that the operation was part of a prolonged and coordinated campaign.

Signs of a dangerous alliance

The attacks are believed to involve a joint effort by the al-Qaeda-linked Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) and the Tuareg separatist group Azawad Liberation Front (FLA).

This alliance is particularly concerning, as the two groups have historically pursued different objectives—one seeking to establish an Islamic system, and the other aiming to create an independent Azawad state in northern Mali. Their cooperation now poses a serious security threat to the Malian state.

Impact on the balance of power

General Camara was among the most influential figures in Mali’s military government. He played a decisive role in the administration formed after the coups of 2020 and 2021 and was widely seen as a close ally—and potential successor—to interim President Assimi Goita.

Goita was reportedly present in Kati at the time of the attack but was moved to a secure location. Officials have confirmed that he is safe and remains in control of the situation.

International response

The attacks have been strongly condemned by international bodies including the African Union, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, and the United States Bureau of African Affairs. The global community has called for the restoration of peace and stability in Mali.

Challenges ahead

Analysts believe the attacks are not merely a military operation but part of a broader strategy to destabilize the state. In the coming days, further violence and clashes over territorial control are likely to intensify in northern and central Mali.

The death of the Defence Minister and the coordinated attacks across the country signal that Mali has entered a new and more complex phase of conflict. The growing unity among militant groups and the weakening grip of the state present a serious challenge for the entire Sahel region.
