Maharashtra Civic Elections 2026: BJP Wave Sweeps Polls, Takes Control of BMC; 30-Year Thackeray Dominance Ends

In the 2026 municipal elections in Maharashtra, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has recorded a sweeping victory, establishing a new political equilibrium in the state. Out of a total of 2,869 seats across 29 municipal corporations, the BJP won 1,425 seats, delivering a crushing defeat to the opposition.

The most significant and symbolic outcome emerged from Mumbai, where the BJP secured control of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the country’s richest civic body. With this result, the nearly three-decade-long dominance of the Thackeray family over the BMC has come to an end.

In the 227-member BMC, the BJP won 89 seats, while its ally Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction) secured 29 seats. The Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena was reduced to 65 seats. Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) won six seats. The Congress, which contested the elections in alliance with the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi, secured 24 seats. The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) won eight seats, while the NCP (Ajit Pawar faction) won three, the Samajwadi Party two, and the Sharad Pawar-led NCP managed to win just one seat.

BJP’s control over the BMC is being seen as politically crucial, as the civic body is not only extremely wealthy but also plays a decisive role in shaping Mumbai’s administrative and development policies. The shift in a corporation long regarded as a Shiv Sena stronghold is being viewed as a major political signal in Maharashtra.

The BJP also delivered a major blow to the Pawar camps in Pune. In the Pune Municipal Corporation, the BJP won 119 seats, securing a clear majority. The Ajit Pawar-led NCP finished second with 27 seats, while the Sharad Pawar faction was reduced to just three seats. The Congress won 15 seats in Pune.

Political analysts believe these civic poll results carry significant implications for the upcoming Assembly and Lok Sabha elections. The BJP’s strong grip over urban voters and the opposition’s fragmented strategy are clearly reflected in the outcomes.

The BJP leadership has described the verdict as a “victory of good governance and development,” while opposition parties have said they will review the results and focus on strengthening their organizations. The mandate is widely seen as setting the stage for new political equations and shifts in Maharashtra in the coming period.
