Jaipur: BLO Threatens Suicide Amid Pressure to Remove Muslim Voters; Election Commission Launches Probe

In Rajasthan’s Hawa Mahal assembly constituency, a Booth Level Officer (BLO) has alleged that he is being pressured to remove Muslim voters’ names from the electoral rolls. The officer has gone so far as to issue a suicide threat in response to the political pressure. The incident has emerged during a special voter revision process, sparking fresh controversy over the integrity of the electoral procedure.

Kirti Kumar, a government school teacher serving as a BLO in Hawa Mahal, claimed that he is being forced to strike off approximately 470 voters from the draft electoral list, the majority of whom are Muslim. He stated that all these voters had already been verified during the official verification process.

In a video that has gone viral on social media, Kumar can be heard issuing a suicide threat over the phone, saying that he might go to the collector’s office to take his own life. During the call, he reportedly told a local representative, “If I remove the entire settlement, maybe it will help someone win the election.”

BJP leaders have denied the allegations, asserting that voter list revisions are being carried out strictly according to Election Commission rules and that there is no plan targeting any particular community. Opposition parties, however, have accused the voter revision process of discrimination and political interference, alleging that Muslim and other minority voters are being specifically targeted.

The Election Commission has launched an immediate inquiry into the matter, promising a thorough review of the facts. The Commission emphasized that any addition or deletion from the voter list must comply with rules and that action will be taken in case of irregularities.

The incident has intensified scrutiny of the special voter revision process, raising concerns over large-scale deletions from the rolls, the pressure faced by officials, and the fairness of voter representation. It has also triggered discussions on the mental health of election officials and the impact of administrative pressures on the integrity of the electoral process.

The combination of political pressure, alleged unequal interference in the voter list, and a BLO’s suicide threat has sparked a renewed debate over the impartiality and transparency of the election process in Rajasthan.
