Strong Opposition in India to US Attack on Venezuela, SDPI Demands Release of Nicolás Maduro

The Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) has strongly condemned the military strikes carried out by the United States on Venezuela and the alleged illegal detention of President Nicolás Maduro. The party described the actions as a blatant violation of international law, the United Nations Charter, and the fundamental principle of national sovereignty.

In a statement, SDPI National Vice President Mohammad Shafi said the US action not only violates Article 2(4) of the UN Charter but also represents a dangerous example of interventionism and imperialist thinking directed at countries of the Global South. He noted that the attack was carried out without approval from the US Congress and without any legitimate mandate from the United Nations.

According to the party, more than 150 US fighter aircraft targeted military installations in Venezuela’s capital, Caracas, including the presidential palace, Miraflores Palace. Reports indicate civilian casualties, disruption of electricity supply, and extensive damage to critical infrastructure. Venezuela’s Vice President Delcy Rodríguez has announced the imposition of a national emergency in the country.

Rejecting the allegations put forward by the United States, SDPI said the attack carried out under the pretext of so-called “narco-terrorism” was based on false narratives, similar to those used during the Iraq war in the past. The party asserted that the real objective behind the operation was to gain control over Venezuela’s vast oil resources.

The statement noted that Venezuela possesses the world’s largest proven oil reserves, which were nationalised in 1976. Decades of US sanctions have already caused severe damage to the Venezuelan economy, and further military intervention is expected to worsen the situation. The party warned that the escalation could lead to a surge in global oil prices and intensify regional refugee crises.

SDPI also said that Venezuela’s pro-Palestine stance and its open opposition to Israel’s military actions in Gaza have been key factors contributing to growing tensions with the United States. President Nicolás Maduro has consistently advocated for Palestinian self-determination and international accountability on global platforms.

The party urged the Government of India to uphold its historic role in the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) by issuing a clear and unconditional condemnation of the US attacks, demanding the immediate release of President Maduro, and initiating efforts to convene an emergency session of the UN Security Council.

SDPI stated that India’s silence at such a critical moment would be contrary to its anti-imperialist legacy and commitment to peace. The party expressed solidarity with the people of Venezuela and with all nations resisting imperial pressure and military aggression.
