Assassination Attempt on Former J&K CM Farooq Abdullah Foiled in Jammu; Accused Kamal Singh Arrested

An alleged assassination attempt on former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, National Conference president, and former Union minister Farooq Abdullah was foiled on Wednesday during a ceremony in Jammu. Panic briefly gripped the venue after a man suddenly opened fire, but alert security personnel prevented a major tragedy and Abdullah escaped unharmed.

Police have arrested the accused from the spot. He has been identified as Kamal Singh Jamwal, a resident of the Purani Mandi area of Jammu.

According to police officials, the incident occurred during a wedding function in the Greater Kailash locality of Jammu, where several political and social personalities were present. In the middle of the ceremony, the sound of gunfire triggered chaos among attendees. Security personnel immediately responded and managed to overpower and detain the suspect.

Sources said that Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary was also present at the event when the firing took place. Reports indicate that he sustained minor injuries during the incident, though his condition is said to be stable and out of danger.

Eyewitnesses said the gunfire caused a brief stampede-like situation among the guests. Police and security forces later cordoned off the area and brought the situation under control.

The Jammu and Kashmir Police said the accused is being questioned and CCTV footage from cameras installed around the venue is being examined to determine the motive behind the attack. Investigators are also trying to ascertain whether the act was part of a larger conspiracy or an individual act.

Following the incident, security has been tightened across the area and a detailed investigation is underway. The attack has raised concerns in political circles, with questions being raised about the security arrangements for senior leaders.
