Activist Sharjeel Imam, arrested in the Delhi riots case, granted 10 days interim bail to attend his brother’s wedding

Student activist Sharjeel Imam, an accused in a case related to the communal violence that took place in northeast Delhi in 2020, has received interim relief from the court. A sessions court in Delhi has granted him 10 days of interim bail to allow him to attend his brother’s wedding.

While hearing the matter, Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai passed the order on Monday. According to the court’s directive, Sharjeel Imam will be released on interim bail from March 20 to March 30 so that he can participate in the family ceremony.

In the petition filed before the court, Sharjeel Imam had requested six weeks of interim bail to attend his brother’s wedding. However, the court granted partial relief and approved only 10 days of interim bail.

In its order, the court clarified that the relief is being granted solely for the purpose of attending the family function, and that he must return to judicial custody once the specified period ends.

It is noteworthy that Sharjeel Imam is among the accused in cases linked to the 2020 Northeast Delhi riots that took place in February 2020. The violence left 53 people dead and more than 700 injured.

The clashes erupted at a time when large-scale protests were taking place in several parts of the national capital against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and the proposed National Register of Citizens.

Police have registered multiple FIRs in the case and filed charge sheets against several accused. The matter is currently under trial in court.
