Karnataka hijab ban: Thousands of Muslim girls robbed of access to education, says PUCL report

Patna(CNA Media/Insaaf Times) Human rights organization, People’s Union for Civil Liberties said in a report that following the order of the state government banning Hijabs in education institutions, Muslim girls and women across Karnataka were denied access to education. The organization cited testimonies from students across the state, “These rights which have been violated include Right to Education without Discrimination, Right to Equality, Right to Dignity, Right to Privacy, Right to Expression, Right to Non-Discrimination and Freedom from Arbitrary State Action,” the PUCL report said. The organization adds that the Karnataka government completely ignored its constitutional obligation in its ‘single-minded focus on ensuring that the hijab was prohibited in colleges’.Several students dropped out of their education institutions because of the directive. The organization urged CM Bommai to take back the ban and also urged the judiciary to launch an inquiry on why the government took such ‘a sudden, arbitrary and unconstitutional’ action. The study by PUCL points out to the harassment that the girls and women had to face, including threats, and taunts. They became fearful to the point that they had to let go of their education.
