SDPI DEPLORES INDIA’S ABSTENTION FROM UNHRC RESOLUTION AGAINST SRI LANKA

New Delhi, 24th March 2021: Sheikh Muhammad Dehlan Baqavi, National Vice-President of Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) strongly denounced the stand of India on the resolution by United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC). India had abstained from voting on the resolution titled ‘Promotion of Reconciliation Accountability and Human Rights in Sri Lanka’ on the human rights violations by Sri Lanka during the Tamil Eelam war. The resolution gives UN human rights Chief Michelle Bachelet the mandate to collect and preserve evidence of crimes related to Sri Lanka’s civil war that ended in 2009 with the defeat of Tamil Tiger rebels. The resolution had accused Lanka of war crimes with threats to take those responsible to the International Courts and impose targeted sanctions against officials allegedly responsible for human rights violations.India government, now in the front line of human rights violations might have found it ‘unethical’ to stand against Sri Lanka because similar or graver human rights violations are a daily routine in the present India ruled by the RSS controlled NDA government, said Baqavi.Abstention from voting against the human rights violations in Sri Lanka by India shows its discriminatory and indifferent attitude towards the Tamil community. Dehlan Baqavi urged the Tamil people to recognise this discrimination and ensure that BJP is taught a lesson through ballot
