Mahuawa Panchayat of Sitamarhi Becomes a National Model of Green Development: 9,000 Saplings Planted, Solar Energy and Biogas Model Help It Secure Third Place in Climate Control Award; To Be Honoured by Prime Minister

Mahuawa Panchayat in Sitamarhi district of Bihar has earned national recognition for its remarkable work in rural development and environmental conservation. The panchayat, located in Bathnaha block, has secured the third position in the prestigious “Climate Control Award”, bringing it into the national spotlight. It is now likely to be honoured by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a national ceremony to be held in New Delhi.

Along with this achievement, the panchayat is also expected to receive an additional ₹50 lakh from the central government to further accelerate local development initiatives.

Selected Among Top Four Panchayats in India

From hundreds of panchayats across the country, only four were shortlisted for this prestigious award. Andhra Pradesh secured the first position, while panchayats from Maharashtra and Odisha jointly held the second position. Mahuawa Panchayat from Bihar was ranked third.

The selection was based on key parameters such as environmental conservation, use of clean energy, water management, and sustainable development practices.

9,000 Saplings Planted in a Single Day

One of the most significant achievements of Mahuawa Panchayat is a massive plantation drive in which 9,000 saplings were planted in a single day. The campaign witnessed active participation from local residents.

In addition to increasing green cover, the panchayat has focused on soil conservation and improving groundwater levels.

Steps Towards Energy Self-Reliance Through Solar and Biogas

The panchayat has taken major steps toward energy self-sufficiency through initiatives such as solar street lights, solar camera systems, and biogas plants.

The biogas initiative is providing clean cooking fuel to several households, reducing dependence on traditional and polluting energy sources.

Focus on Water Conservation and Development

Mahuawa Panchayat has implemented several water conservation projects, including rainwater harvesting systems, restoration of ponds, and beautification of ghats. These efforts have significantly strengthened local water management systems.

Review by Central Government Team

The initiatives of the panchayat were inspected by a team led by Vijay Kumar Behera, Economic Advisor at the Ministry of Panchayati Raj. Following the review, the panchayat’s efforts were highly appreciated and it was nominated for the national award.

Local Leadership Expresses Pride

Panchayat head Sanjeev Bhushan Gopal described the achievement as a collective success of the entire village, stating that it reflects the community’s commitment to cleanliness, greenery, and water conservation.

A Model for Rural Development

Experts believe Mahuawa Panchayat is emerging as a “climate-smart village model” that can serve as an inspiration for other rural areas across India.

The model reflects effective use of local resources, strong community participation, and environmentally sustainable development practices.

This achievement proves that with strong leadership, community involvement, and a clear development vision, rural areas can become examples not only at the national but also at the global level.

All eyes are now on the upcoming national ceremony where Mahuawa Panchayat will be honoured for its green and sustainable achievements.
