Political uproar over bulldozer action in Kolkata’s Tiljala: ISF chief Naushad Siddiqui visits site after demolition of fire-affected leather factory, meets affected families; allegations of action without notice and lack of rehabilitation.

A political controversy has intensified over the demolition of a leather factory in the Tiljala area of Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal. Indian Secular Front (ISF) Central President and Bhangar MLA Naushad Siddiqui has accused the state government of “vindictive politics” and violation of legal procedures.

Siddiqui visited Tiljala on Tuesday, where the factory was recently demolished following a fire incident. According to him, the unit was the primary source of livelihood for nearly 50 families, and the authorities carried out the demolition without adequate notice, hearing, or sufficient time for response.

In its statement, the ISF claimed that the property was purchased in 1992 and municipal taxes have been regularly paid to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. It also stated that the factory’s license was valid until 2029. The organization further said that several fire safety-related documents were available, and the action was taken merely on the grounds of a missing fire insurance renewal certificate.

The party alleged that the administration neither allowed time to remove belongings nor served proper legal notice before the demolition. It also claimed that electricity and water supply were disconnected during the operation, affecting nearby households as well.

Siddiqui termed the action a violation of human rights and demanded rehabilitation for the affected families. He said that if any structure is to be removed, the administration must ensure adequate notice, time, and alternative arrangements beforehand.

It is noteworthy that the Supreme Court of India, in its guidelines issued on November 13, 2024, had clearly stated that prior notice, opportunity of hearing, and due legal process are mandatory before any demolition.

The ISF has alleged that these directives were not followed in the present case and has demanded an impartial investigation, rehabilitation measures, and relief for the affected people.

Meanwhile, legal opinion has also been sought from senior advocate Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya, and the party has indicated the possibility of initiating further legal action in the matter.
