A controversy has erupted over a proposed event in Bengaluru, the capital of Karnataka. The Karnataka chapter of the Association for Protection of Civil Rights (APCR) has sent a formal letter to the Principal of National College, Basavanagudi, demanding the cancellation of a program scheduled to be held on the campus.
According to available information, the Hindu Jagruti Samiti is planning to organize a public lecture titled “Understanding Corporate Jihad: Myths & Facts” on 16 May 2026 in the college auditorium. APCR has raised objections to this event.
APCR’s objection
In its letter, APCR stated that the title and content of the program appear to be “communal sensitive” and give the impression of targeting a specific community. The organization has expressed serious concern, calling it potentially harmful to social harmony.
The letter further states that such language and presentation could affect the academic environment and may create discomfort and tension among students and staff.
Reference to legal provisions
APCR has cited provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), stating that such speeches and events could lead to “spreading enmity on religious grounds” and may create a situation of “public unrest.” The organization also referred to Article 51A of the Constitution, emphasizing that educational institutions are responsible for promoting a scientific temperament and social unity.
Concerns over law and order in campus area
The organization has also expressed apprehension that such programs may disturb law and order in the surrounding area. The letter notes that the possibility of a tense situation in Basavanagudi, Bengaluru, cannot be ruled out.
Demand for cancellation
APCR Karnataka has urged the college administration to immediately cancel permission for the program. It further stated that if the event is held, strict monitoring should be ensured to prevent any objectionable or unlawful speech.
The organization has also clarified that it reserves the right to take further legal action if necessary.
Awaiting administrative response
The National College administration has not yet issued any official statement on the matter. Meanwhile, discussion over the proposed event has intensified locally, and various groups are now closely watching the college administration’s decision.
