End of 48-hour intense student agitation at IGIMS Nursing College: Vice Principal removed from all academic responsibilities, high-level inquiry committee formed over allegations of mental harassment and discrimination, assurance given on pending stipend since 2018, consensus reached between administration and students after hospital services were disrupted during the protest

In Patna, the 48-hour long student agitation at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) Nursing College came to an end on Friday after intervention by the Health Department and the institute administration. Several key decisions were taken during the talks, following which the protesting students called off their sit-in.

According to reports, a delegation of student representatives held discussions with Health Department officials in the Director’s office of the institute for about an hour. After the meeting, the administration decided to immediately remove the Vice Principal from all academic responsibilities. She will no longer be part of any academic duties.

An high-level committee has also been formed to investigate the allegations made by the students, which will conduct a detailed probe and submit its report.

Around 450 students participated in the protest

The agitation began on Wednesday, involving approximately 450 students from the 2021 to 2025 batches. The protesting students had made serious allegations against the college administration, including mental harassment, disrespectful behaviour, alleged discrimination in examinations, and irregularities in the hostel.

The students said that despite repeated complaints, no concrete action was taken, which forced them to launch the protest.

Hospital services were affected

During the protest, the main gate of the college remained closed, which affected normal hospital operations. Ambulance movement and patient access were disrupted, impacting OPD and emergency services. Patients and their families had to wait for hours, causing significant inconvenience.

Agreement on stipend and academic issues

During the talks, the issue of pending stipend since 2018 was also raised by the students. The Health Department assured that the process would be initiated within seven working days.

The administration also assured that delays in academic sessions and other education-related issues would be addressed in a timely manner.

Focus on the inquiry report

After the end of the agitation, students have returned to classes and hostels. However, attention now remains on the inquiry committee’s report, which will determine the truth behind the allegations and the future course of action. For now, normalcy has been restored at the institution.
