Anger erupted on the streets of Patna on Friday as teacher aspirants protested against the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) for not releasing the notification for the TRE 4.0 teacher recruitment examination. Thousands of candidates gathered at Dak Bungalow Chowk and nearby areas, demanding the immediate release of the advertisement and relaxation in the upper age limit.

Tension escalated between the police and the protesters during the demonstration, following which police resorted to baton charge in an attempt to disperse the crowd. Several students, including female aspirants, were reportedly injured in the action. The incident has triggered a major political controversy in Bihar, with both the ruling alliance and opposition parties questioning the government’s handling of the issue.

According to eyewitnesses, a large number of aspirants were carrying out a peaceful march to convey their demands to the government. The protesters said they had been waiting for the TRE 4.0 notification for several months, but the government and the commission have repeatedly changed timelines, leaving youths in uncertainty.

The aspirants alleged that delays in the recruitment process have pushed thousands of candidates to the verge of crossing the age limit. Financial pressure and prolonged uncertainty have intensified anger among students.

Chirag Paswan calls action “condemnable”

Union Minister and Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) chief Chirag Paswan described the baton charge as “extremely unfortunate and condemnable.” He said that in a democracy, young people have the right to raise their legitimate demands, and the government must listen to them seriously.

Chirag Paswan stated that the future and patience of thousands of teacher recruitment aspirants should be respected and that the TRE 4.0 notification must be released at the earliest. However, he also appealed to the candidates to maintain patience, saying that after the recent cabinet expansion, the government could take positive steps.

His statement is being seen as politically significant because his party is part of the NDA government both in Bihar and at the Centre. Questioning the actions of his own alliance government has sparked discussion in political circles.

RJD calls it the “face of authoritarianism”

The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) termed the baton charge the “authoritarian face” of the government. Party spokesperson Chitranjan Gagan said that for the last two years, the government and BPSC have continuously misled teacher aspirants.

He alleged that the government first claimed the recruitment process would be completed in 2024, then shifted the timeline to August 2025 and later to October 2025. Grand promises were made to youths during elections, but now the government and commission are backtracking on their own statements.

RJD said that lakhs of youths in Bihar are demanding employment, but instead of listening to them, the government is responding with batons. The party demanded action against officials responsible for ordering the lathi-charge.

CPM says government is implementing an “anti-people agenda”

CPM state secretary Lalan Chaudhary and DYFI state president Manoj Kumar Chandravanshi jointly condemned the police action.

They said thousands of students and women aspirants were carrying out a peaceful march, but instead of engaging in dialogue, the government chose the path of force.

The CPM leaders accused the NDA government led by Samrat Choudhary of implementing an “anti-people agenda.” They said the condition of education and employment in Bihar is continuously deteriorating, while the recruitment commission remains surrounded by allegations of corruption and paper leaks.

The party demanded that the government hold talks with representatives of the aspirants and take appropriate decisions on their demands.

CPIML alleges “attack on democratic rights”

CPIML state secretary Kunal termed the baton charge an attack on democratic rights. He said the manner in which police chased and beat youths protesting peacefully for their future and employment exposed the government’s repressive mindset.

The party alleged that several aspirants suffered head injuries and female candidates faced inhuman treatment. It said lakhs of posts remain vacant in Bihar, but instead of conducting recruitments, the government is busy suppressing the voices of youths.

CPIML demanded immediate release of TRE 4.0 vacancies, action against responsible officials, and proper medical treatment for injured students.

SDPI also targets the government

Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) Bihar state president Dr. Aftab Taimi also strongly condemned the incident.

He said: “Lakhs of youths in Bihar have been waiting for teacher recruitment for years. If the government is unable to provide employment, it should at least show the courage to listen to the voices of young people. The use of force against peacefully protesting students proves that the government is afraid of questions raised by the youth. SDPI stands with the legitimate demands of the aspirants and demands that the TRE 4.0 notification be issued without delay.”

Growing anger among youths

Confusion over TRE 4.0 has persisted in Bihar for several months. The lack of clarity in the BPSC examination calendar and continuously changing statements have increased dissatisfaction among aspirants.

Political observers believe that unemployment and teacher recruitment could emerge as major electoral issues in Bihar in the coming period. The baton charge in Patna has further intensified the debate over whether demanding employment in Bihar is now being treated as a law-and-order issue.
