Attempt to Turn Campuses into ‘RSS Shakhas’? SDPI Launches Sharp Attack, Questions University Neutrality

The Social Democratic Party of India has expressed serious concern over the increasing ideological activities on university campuses across the country. The party alleged that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh is attempting to turn public universities into platforms for ideological expansion under the guise of its centenary celebrations.

In a statement issued by the party’s National Secretary, Aatika Sajid, it was said that programs like the ‘Yuva Kumbh’ Organized in colleges of Delhi University and Jamia Millia Islamia are not merely cultural events, but deliberate efforts to normalize a particular political ideology. The SDPI described this as a “threat to constitutional values and academic freedom.”

The statement emphasized that universities are meant to promote knowledge, critical thinking, and democratic values—not to serve as platforms for propagating any one ideology. According to the party, the ideology of the RSS has historically been at odds with India’s pluralistic and secular framework, and its ideological foundations—especially the views of M.S. Golwalkar—have long been controversial regarding the role of minorities.

The SDPI stated that students opposing such events are not being “intolerant,” but are instead expressing legitimate democratic dissent. It added that in minority institutions, such programs could create an atmosphere of fear, alienation, and insecurity among students.

The party also accused university administrations of adopting a double standard. According to the statement, while ordinary student activities often face restrictions, events linked to the RSS are granted permission and police protection, raising questions about institutional neutrality.

The SDPI has demanded that all public universities in the country remain independent, inclusive, and free from political interference, so they can fulfill their core mission of education and upholding democratic values with complete impartiality.
