After the formation of the new government in Bihar, political activity in the state has intensified. In this sequence, Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary held his first formal meeting today in New Delhi with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The meeting took place at the Prime Minister’s official residence at 7 Lok Kalyan Marg. Although it has been described as a courtesy meeting, it is being viewed in political circles as having significant political and administrative implications.
Following the resignation of Nitish Kumar, a new government was formed in Bihar on April 15 under the leadership of Samrat Choudhary. This is the first occasion when the Chief Minister has directly met the Prime Minister after taking office. The meeting is being seen as the beginning of improved coordination between the Centre and the state.
According to sources, the issue of Bihar’s cabinet expansion was also likely discussed. Even after several days of government formation, the full cabinet has not yet been constituted, raising concerns over administrative delays. Internal reports suggest that discussions may have included the list of possible ministers, distribution of departments, and balancing representation among alliance partners.
Political observers believe that this meeting is not merely formal but could play an important role in shaping the future political direction. Maintaining balance within the coalition government is considered one of the biggest challenges for the new Chief Minister.
It is being discussed that in the new cabinet, the Bharatiya Janata Party may get around 17 ministerial posts, Janata Dal (United) 15, Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) 2, while HAM and RLM may get one portfolio each. However, the final decision is expected to be taken at the central level in Delhi.
Several senior BJP leaders are currently engaged in the West Bengal election campaign, which is also being cited as a reason for the delay in cabinet expansion. It is expected that the cabinet may be expanded anytime after May 4.
At present, the state government is functioning with a limited number of ministers, leading to pending files in several departments and slowing administrative work. Therefore, early cabinet expansion is being considered necessary.
Overall, while the meeting between Samrat Choudhary and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been described as a courtesy call, its political signals are clear—coordination between the Centre and the new Bihar government appears to be strengthening further.
