Relief Amid LPG Shortage: Government to Provide Kerosene as Alternative Fuel Across 21 States and UTs

Amid continuous supply disruptions and rising prices of cooking gas (LPG) across the country, the central government has announced relief measures for the public. Kerosene (SKO) will now be made available as an alternative domestic fuel in 21 states and union territories. This move comes primarily in response to the international energy crisis and the geopolitical situation in the Middle East.

Kerosene Supply for 60 Days

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has issued an order stating that kerosene will be supplied through petrol pumps and the Public Distribution System (PDS) for the next 60 days. The aim is to provide immediate relief to families who are unable to receive LPG cylinders on time.

According to the government notification, petrol pumps and registered distributors are allowed to store and distribute kerosene. Temporary relaxations have been granted in traditional licensing and storage rules to ensure an uninterrupted supply chain. Instructions have also been issued to maintain monitoring and control over the distribution process.

Objective and Policy Framework

The central government has clarified that this measure is temporary and may be withdrawn once LPG supply stabilizes. The government has also assured that petroleum, diesel, and LPG stocks in the country are sufficient. Experts consider this decision a practical policy to provide relief to domestic consumers amid the energy crisis.

Kerosene Distribution Across States

States like Maharashtra have been allocated 3,744 kilolitres of kerosene. The plan is to provide 3 litres of kerosene per family. Priority will be given to cardholders under the Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) and Priority Household (PHH) schemes. Families without ration cards can also receive kerosene by showing a domicile certificate.

States are also focusing on other local alternatives, such as PNG (Piped Natural Gas), induction cookers, and traditional fuels. The goal is to prevent any disruption in domestic energy supply.

Experts say this step is crucial to provide immediate relief to domestic consumers amid the international energy crisis. They note that the policy will not only reduce pressure on LPG supply but also help meet the everyday cooking needs of households smoothly. Through kerosene supply, the government has prioritized domestic energy security and the daily needs of the general public, offering relief to millions of families facing LPG shortages.
