Amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, Spain has taken a significant diplomatic step by deciding to recall its ambassador from Israel. According to an order published in Spain’s official government gazette, the appointment of Ambassador Ana María Sálomon Pérez, who was serving in Israel, has been terminated.
Government sources said that the Spanish embassy in Tel Aviv will now be headed by a chargé d’affaires, meaning a senior diplomat will oversee the mission on an interim basis. The move comes at a time when Spain has repeatedly criticized the war in Gaza and the military strikes carried out by the United States and Israel against Iran.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez recently described the US–Israel military action as “unjustified,” reiterating that Madrid’s clear policy is to stand “against war.” He emphasized that international disputes should be resolved through diplomacy and dialogue rather than military force.
Spain is among the few European countries that have openly criticized Israel’s military campaign in Gaza. Last year, the Spanish parliament passed legislation imposing a complete ban on the sale of weapons, military equipment, and dual-use technology to Israel.
Tensions between the two countries had already escalated when Spain formally recognized Palestine as an independent state. Following that decision, Israel also recalled its ambassador from Madrid.
With the conflict in the Middle East intensifying, Spain’s latest move is being seen as a distinct diplomatic stance within Europe. Analysts believe it could spark renewed debate within the European Union over the region’s ongoing crisis.
