Gulf War: Israeli Airstrikes Pound Lebanon, Destruction in Tyre and Beirut; Nearly 700,000 Displaced as Hezbollah Retaliation Escalates Tensions

Amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, Israeli forces carried out a series of intense airstrikes across several areas of Lebanon on Tuesday. The attacks struck the southern city of Tyre and the southern suburbs of the capital Beirut, damaging multiple buildings and forcing large numbers of residents to flee their homes.

According to the United Nations, Israeli bombardments have displaced nearly 670,000 people across Lebanon. The Lebanese Ministry of Health reported that around 486 people have been killed since the latest wave of attacks began last week, with many more injured.

The Israeli military said its strikes were aimed at Hezbollah military infrastructure, including command centers and rocket-launching sites. The army also warned residents living south of the Litani River to evacuate the area immediately and move at least 300 meters away to safer locations.

In the coastal city of Tyre in southern Lebanon, an Israeli strike severely damaged a building. Witnesses reported thick plumes of smoke rising from the area after the explosion as rescue teams rushed to search through the rubble for people trapped beneath the debris.

Israeli warplanes also bombed Beirut’s southern suburbs—Haret Hreik, Ghobeiri, Laylaki, Hadath, Burj al-Barajneh, and Chiyah. These neighborhoods are collectively known as “Dahiya,” a densely populated area of the capital. Local sources said several families fled to safer locations following the attacks.

Air and drone strikes were also reported in several towns in southern Lebanon, including Qabrikha, Taybeh, Deir Siryan, and Ansariyah. The attacks left multiple people wounded and caused damage to several homes.

Meanwhile, Hezbollah intensified its retaliatory operations. The group claimed it had fired missiles and rockets at several military sites in northern and central Israel. In one strike, at least 16 people were injured in central Israel. Hezbollah also said its fighters ambushed Israeli troops in southern Lebanon and targeted three Merkava tanks.

Analysts warn that the conflict could escalate into a wider regional confrontation, as rising tensions between Iran and Israel in recent days have further complicated the already volatile situation in the Middle East.

Kaja Kallas, the foreign policy chief of the European Union, urged both sides to agree to an immediate ceasefire, warning that the current situation could push Lebanon “toward chaos” and trigger a severe humanitarian crisis.

With the bombardment continuing, the humanitarian situation in Lebanon is worsening. Stadiums, schools, and public buildings in several cities have been converted into temporary shelters, housing thousands of displaced families. UN officials say the pace of displacement is now faster than during the 2024 war, raising fears of a deepening humanitarian emergency.
