Trump Issues New Warning: U.S. May Strike Cuba After Iran Conflict, Signals Intent to Influence Iran’s Next Leadership

U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday reiterated a threat of military action against Cuba during a reception at the White House for Major League Soccer champions Inter Miami CF. Speaking to reporters, Trump said that any action against Cuba would come only after the ongoing conflict with Iran concludes, adding, “It’s just a matter of time.”

Trump praised Secretary of State Marco Rubio, noting that strict sanctions imposed on Cuba have placed “severe pressure” on the island nation’s economy. “What’s happening in Cuba is remarkable,” he said. “Our first focus is Iran, but Cuba will soon be on the radar as well.”

Highlighting U.S. military strength, Trump claimed successes across multiple regions, including Venezuela and Iran. “Our military has been rebuilt and strengthened, and when we use it, it works,” he said, referencing campaigns such as the ‘Midnight Hammer’ operations in Iran.

In January, the U.S. conducted an air campaign that removed Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro from a key position, prompting Trump to warn that Venezuela would halt all oil supplies to Cuba, a critical component of the Cuban economy.

Trump Signals Desire to Intervene in Iran’s Leadership Selection

In a separate statement, Trump expressed a desire to play an active role in the selection of Iran’s next Supreme Leader. He described Ali Khamenei’s son, Mostafa Khamenei, as “weak” and suggested the United States seeks a more favorable leadership in Tehran.

Trump cited Venezuela’s Delsi Rodríguez as an example, saying, “In Venezuela, we intervened, and the government remained intact. Delsi cooperated with U.S. interests, assisting with oil sales and halting supplies to Cuba. I want to see similar leadership in Iran.”

Analysts note that drawing parallels between Venezuela and Iran is challenging. Maduro’s removal involved a limited military operation, while Iran remains fully engaged in an ongoing conflict with the U.S. and Israel. Furthermore, Iran’s Supreme Leader must meet strict religious qualifications, making direct intervention complex.

Iranian officials have made it clear that no negotiations with the U.S. are underway, while Trump’s aides assert that the United States is unleashing “death and destruction” on Iran.

Trump’s statements have triggered global concern, as they signal direct U.S. military and diplomatic intervention, raising significant questions about international law and regional stability.
