Demand for Special Status to Seemanchal; All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen Seeks Home Minister’s Intervention

All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen has urged the Union government to grant special status to Bihar’s Seemanchal region and sought immediate intervention from the Centre. The party’s national spokesperson, Advocate Adil Hasan, said Seemanchal has long suffered neglect in educational, industrial and infrastructure development, leading to growing regional imbalance.

He noted that Seemanchal — comprising the districts of Kishanganj, Katihar, Purnea and Araria — continues to face a severe shortage of higher educational institutions and employment opportunities. In view of the situation, he called for the establishment of a medical college and an engineering college in the region to prevent local youth from migrating to other states in pursuit of education.

Hasan also demanded adequate central funding for the Kishanganj centre of Aligarh Muslim University. He said that with proper resources and infrastructure, the centre could significantly expand access to quality higher education for students in Seemanchal and strengthen the academic environment in the region.

The spokesperson further called for a special economic package for Seemanchal, stressing the need for a dedicated fund to promote industrial development and generate local employment. He argued that the lack of investment has forced many young people to migrate to larger cities in search of work.

In the context of social justice, Hasan reiterated the demand to include the Surjapuri community in the Central OBC list to ensure reservation benefits. He said socially and educationally backward groups must receive their constitutional entitlements.

Referring to the recurring floods that affect Seemanchal every year, Hasan said they severely impact livelihoods and agriculture. He urged the Centre to implement a permanent flood control plan, strengthen embankments and adopt a long-term water management policy.

The party expressed hope that the Union government would take a positive decision in the interest of balanced regional development and the welfare of Seemanchal.
