Upset in Amravati mayor election, Bharatiya Janata Party candidate elected with support of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen councillor; party expels councillor

An unexpected political development has emerged in the mayoral election of the Amravati Municipal Corporation in Maharashtra. Following a vote cast by All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen councillor Meera Kamble in favour of the Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Shrichand Tejwani, the Bharatiya Janata Party secured the mayoral post.

During the election, the decisive vote came from the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen councillor, leading to the declaration of Shrichand Tejwani as the elected Mayor. This turn of events has created fresh ripples in the civic body’s political landscape.

Soon after the incident, the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen initiated disciplinary action against Meera Kamble and expelled her from the party. In a statement, the party said that the councillor’s action was against its ideology and organisational discipline.

Along with the mayoral election, voting was also held for the post of Deputy Mayor, in which Sachin Bhende of the Yuva Swabhiman Party was elected.

With these developments, the Mahayuti alliance has established its control over the Amravati Municipal Corporation. The Mahayuti comprises the Bharatiya Janata Party, Shiv Sena (Shinde faction), the Nationalist Congress Party (Ajit Pawar faction) and the Yuva Swabhiman Party.

As per the agreed power-sharing formula, Shrichand Tejwani will serve as Mayor for the first one and a half years, after which Bharatiya Janata Party leader Ashish Atkare will take charge of the post for the next one and a half years.

This political development is being seen as a significant shift in the power structure of the Amravati Municipal Corporation.
