In a significant development in Bihar politics, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) has announced a major leadership change by appointing Tejashwi Yadav as the party’s National Executive President. With this decision, the long political era of Lalu Prasad Yadav, who has served as the party’s national president since its formation in 1997—has formally come to an end. Tejashwi Yadav will now assume responsibility for the party’s organizational and strategic affairs.
The announcement was made during the inaugural session of the RJD’s national executive meeting. Party supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav, former Chief Minister Rabri Devi, and several senior leaders were present on the occasion. During the meeting, Lalu Yadav formally handed over the appointment letter to his son Tejashwi Yadav.
In a post on its official X handle, the RJD said “The beginning of a new era! Tejashwi Yadav has been appointed as the National Executive President of the Rashtriya Janata Dal.”
RJD spokesperson Ejaz Ahmed said that after receiving approval from the national president, a proposal was moved to appoint Leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Yadav as the National Executive President. The proposal was unanimously approved by the national executive. He added that Tejashwi Yadav will now oversee the party’s organizational functioning in line with the directions of the party leadership and the national president.
Tejashwi Yadav is the younger son of former Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav. He has previously served as Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar and is currently the Leader of the Opposition in the Bihar Legislative Assembly. The RJD contested the recent Assembly elections under his leadership; however, the party suffered a defeat.
Following the election results, the party has been engaged in introspection and a process of organizational restructuring. Tejashwi Yadav’s appointment is being viewed as part of this exercise. Political analysts see the move as an effort to give the RJD a new direction and strengthen the organization through younger leadership.
