Tripura: Fire at Muslim Homes, Shops, and Mosque in Fatikroy, Crisis Worsens Due to Police Inaction

On Saturday morning, a series of arson attacks targeted the homes, shops, and a mosque of the Muslim community in Tripura’s Fatikroy area, spreading fear and anger among residents. Locals allege that the attacks were carried out by Hindutva groups, who were reportedly collecting donations for an upcoming Hindu religious event.

Residents said that police were present at the scene but failed to take any effective action, creating an atmosphere of insecurity and panic. Affected families claim they lost both their homes and livelihoods in the attacks.

Masebar Ali, who was injured during the attack and is currently hospitalized, told Maktoob that some Hindutva activists came to his shop demanding donations. “I told them I had already paid and would give more in a few days, but they didn’t listen and started attacking me,” he said.

Ali added that the attackers set fire to his house and his farming equipment, including a tractor. “The police were standing there but did nothing,” he said. Senior officials and the Tripura State Rifles arrived about half an hour later, by which time significant damage had already been done.

Community leader Maulana Abdul Malik said the clash began around 9 a.m. “Some people came from the temple club to collect donations. When locals objected or said they had already contributed, they began assaulting them. The situation quickly escalated into arson. Five to six homes, shops, the mosque, and graves were set on fire. Motorcycles, cars, and tractors were also destroyed,” he said.

Local residents have criticized the administration and police for their inaction, demanding a fair investigation and strict action against the perpetrators.

As of now, neither the district administration nor the police have issued an official statement regarding the incident.
