Khagaria Child Rape-Murder Sparks Outrage; 14 Arrested, Including RJD Leader, After Collectorate Violence

The brutal rape and murder of a five-year-old girl in Bihar’s Khagaria district has shaken the entire region. Public outrage over the heinous crime escalated on January 8, when hundreds of protesters stormed the Khagaria Collectorate, vandalized government property, and created chaos. Following the violence and law-and-order disruption, the police administration took strict action, arresting 14 people, including an RJD leader, and filing FIRs against 82 named and unidentified individuals.

Protesters alleged that the girl was killed after being raped to destroy evidence, and that the police initially did not treat the case with the seriousness it warranted. Family members and villagers demanded the immediate and strict punishment of the accused, as well as the removal of the local police station in-charge. The demonstration gradually turned violent, culminating in the ransacking of the Collectorate premises.

According to reports, the protesters forcefully entered the assembly hall, sat on officials’ chairs, raised slogans, and temporarily blocked the Kachahari Road. Order was restored after intervention and persuasion by administrative authorities.

Khagaria Superintendent of Police Rakesh Kumar stated that the FIR registered at Chitragupt Nagar Police Station includes sections under the POCSO Act and other serious charges. He added that there is evidence of the crowd being mobilized in a coordinated manner.

Among those arrested are Pintu Ram, brother of former RJD MLA Chandan Ram, and Neeraj Kumar, State General Secretary of the RJD Youth Wing. The police claim that certain political elements played a role in inciting the crowd.

Eight police personnel and one security guard have been suspended for negligence in duty, and explanations have been sought from four station heads. The SP said that the main accused was arrested within 10 hours of the crime, but rumors and mistrust fueled the violent protests.

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed under Sadar SDPO Mukul Kumar Ranjan to investigate the circulation of the victim’s photograph on social media, which is being treated as a serious matter. Action under the IT Act will be taken against the perpetrators.

The girl went missing from a village in the Gangaur police station area on January 7. Her body was recovered the next day from a mustard field. The horrific crime has sparked outrage across the district.

SP Rakesh Kumar emphasized that the process to ensure strict punishment for the accused is underway, but no one has the right to resort to violence, vandalism, or take the law into their own hands.

This tragic incident not only highlights the horrifying nature of crimes that shock society but also underscores the serious challenges that arise when demands for justice turn violent, threatening law and order.
