A disturbing case has emerged from King George’s Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow, where a junior resident doctor stands accused of luring a female colleague with promises of marriage, sexually exploiting her, forcing an abortion, and pressuring her to convert to another religion for marriage. The police have registered an FIR against the accused, while the university administration has suspended him with immediate effect.
According to police, both the accused and the victim are junior residents at the same institution. The accused allegedly presented himself as unmarried and invited the victim to his rented accommodation under the pretext of marriage, where he reportedly engaged in sexual relations with her.
Upon discovering that the victim was pregnant, the accused allegedly administered abortive drugs, resulting in a forced abortion.
The victim later learned that the accused was already married. When she pressed him to marry her, he allegedly stated that he would only marry her if she converted to Islam. The victim refused to change her religion, following which the accused reportedly began issuing threats and subjecting her to mental harassment.
Under sustained psychological pressure, the victim attempted an overdose of sleeping pills on December 17. She was hospitalized for treatment and is now safe with her family.
The police have registered cases against the accused under sections 69 (sexual exploitation by deception), 89 (causing abortion without consent), and 351 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code. Additionally, action has been taken under the anti-conversion law.
The university suspended the accused following an internal inquiry under the Vishakha Guidelines. During the suspension, the accused will not be allowed entry into the campus.
Both the Uttar Pradesh government and the State Commission for Women have taken the matter seriously. Authorities have assured strict investigation and legal action to ensure that any attempt at sexual exploitation or forced religious conversion is impartially probed and punished.
