The long-standing demand for the establishment of a permanent bench of the Allahabad High Court in Western Uttar Pradesh gained fresh momentum on Monday as the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) organised a coordinated, peaceful, statewide programme. During the initiative, memoranda addressed to the President of India were submitted through district magistrates in several districts across Uttar Pradesh.
According to a statement issued by the SDPI Uttar Pradesh state office, on December 22, 2025, the party’s district and assembly units submitted memoranda in Hapur, Meerut, Shamli, Saharanpur, Ghaziabad, Kairana, Lucknow, Azamgarh, Varanasi and Bahraich, among other districts, reiterating the demand.
In its memorandum, the party stated that millions of people in Western Uttar Pradesh are still compelled to travel 600 to 800 kilometres to the principal bench of the Allahabad High Court in Prayagraj to seek justice, a situation that runs contrary to the constitutional guarantee of equal, accessible and speedy justice.
SDPI further highlighted that a substantial proportion of cases filed in the High Court originate from Western Uttar Pradesh. Despite the high volume of land disputes, criminal cases, labour, industrial and service-related matters from the region, the absence of a permanent bench not only causes hardship to the general public but also continues to increase the burden on the principal bench in Prayagraj.
Speaking to the media, SDPI Uttar Pradesh state president Dr Nizamuddin Khan said that the demand for a permanent High Court bench in Western Uttar Pradesh is not merely an administrative issue but one intrinsically linked to the constitutional right to justice of millions of citizens. He indicated that the party would soon announce the next phase of the movement and is also considering filing a fresh public interest litigation before the Supreme Court on the issue.
The SDPI Uttar Pradesh appealed to the President of India to take serious cognisance of this long-pending, just and constitutional demand of the people of Western Uttar Pradesh and to issue necessary directions at the earliest for the establishment of a permanent High Court bench.
The party made it clear that until the demand is fulfilled, SDPI will continue to advance this public movement in an organised manner while remaining within democratic and constitutional norms.
