A chilling incident of mob lynching has come to light in Bhatta village under Roh block of Bihar’s Nawada district, sending shockwaves across the region. After allegedly asking his name and religion, a mob of around 10–12 people brutally assaulted 35-year-old Athar Hussain and subjected him to inhuman torture. Critically injured, Athar Hussain succumbed to his injuries during treatment on the night of December 12 at Bihar Sharif Sadar Hospital.
According to family members, the account narrated by Athar Hussain before his death was deeply horrifying. They alleged that the attackers first poured petrol on his body and then used a heated iron rod to brand his hands, legs, fingers and several parts of his body. His fingers were broken, his palms were severely burnt, and an attempt was reportedly made to cut his ears with pliers. He was also assaulted with bricks and crushed after the attackers climbed onto his chest.
The victim’s brother, Mohammad Sakib, said Athar was a hardworking man who lived a simple life. For nearly 20 years, he had been selling clothes in Roh and nearby areas to support his family. The family alleges that Athar was targeted solely because of his name and Muslim identity. He was the only breadwinner of the family.
Police said the incident took place on December 5, in connection with which an FIR has been registered. Roh police station in-charge Ranjan Kumar said that four accused—Sonu Kumar, Ranjan Kumar, Sachin Kumar and Shri Kumar—have been arrested so far, while raids are ongoing to nab the remaining suspects. Police have assured that the case is being investigated with utmost seriousness and that the culprits will not be spared.
Following Athar Hussain’s death, the family has been plunged into deep grief. Human rights organisations and social activists have strongly condemned the gruesome crime, demanding immediate compensation, security for the victim’s family and swift justice. The incident once again raises serious questions about the growing menace of mob violence, hate crimes and the state of law and order in the country.
