Historic Delhi Protest by Karnataka’s 59 Nomadic Dalit Communities: “Battle for 1% Reservation”

New Delhi, October 2, 2025: Fifty-nine of Karnataka’s most marginalized nomadic Dalit communities staged a historic protest today at Jantar Mantar. Over 300 people participated, demanding 1% internal reservation in education and government jobs from both the central and Karnataka state governments.

These communities are listed as the ‘most backward’ in the Justice Nagmohan Das Commission report, which had recommended 1% reservation for them. However, the Congress-led Karnataka government rejected the recommendation and merged these communities with dominant Scheduled Caste groups, effectively eliminating their chances of separate representation.

Protesters highlighted their demands through cultural performances and slogans. Some were taken into custody by Delhi Police, but the demonstrations continued unabated. Participants called on Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and senior leader Rahul Gandhi to intervene on their behalf.

The National Alliance of People’s Movements (NAPM) also appealed to the Congress leadership to ensure 1% internal reservation for these nomadic Dalit communities in Karnataka, emphasizing that such a move would be a significant step toward social justice and equality.

The Karnataka government has implemented a 6:6:5 reservation formula for Scheduled Castes, giving more quota to dominant communities. This has caused discontent among smaller sub-groups, particularly those historically marginalized.

BJP and other opposition parties criticized the government’s move, stating that it could deepen societal divisions and undermine the rights of backward communities.

The struggle of Karnataka’s nomadic Dalit communities has become a symbol of continuous efforts toward equality and justice. Experts warn that if their demands are not addressed, social unrest and further protests may escalate.
