Fatehganj: Dalit elders attacked over not saying ‘Ram-Ram’, injured with sticks and knives

In Uttar Pradesh’s Fatehganj police station area, a deadly attack was carried out on two elderly members of the Dalit community in Jabarapur village on Tuesday evening. The reason for the attack is reportedly trivial— the elders, sitting on a charpai (traditional cot), did not greet some visitors with ‘Ram-Ram’. The assailants attacked the men with sticks and knives, leaving them seriously injured.

The victims, 60-year-old Bhagat Verma and 70-year-old Kallu Shrivas, were working in their fields when Rakesh, along with three unidentified accomplices, arrived at the scene intoxicated. It is alleged that Rakesh confronted Bhagat Verma for not standing up to show respect and started an argument. The dispute escalated when the attackers hurled caste-based slurs at Bhagat Verma and began beating him with sticks.

When Kallu Shrivas tried to intervene, the assailants stabbed him, leaving both men bloodied and critically wounded.

The victims stated that although people gathered after hearing their screams, no one dared to intervene due to fear of the attackers. The assailants also threatened to kill both men before fleeing. Additionally, Kallu Shrivas alleged that the attackers stole ₹500 from his pocket.

Bhagat Verma’s son, Gangaram, filed a complaint with the police. CO Praveen Kumar confirmed that a case has been registered against the accused under the SC/ST Act and charges of assault. He clarified that while the victims claim the attackers are linked to the “Dasyu Thokia gang,” no active member of the gang is currently operational. Police are conducting a thorough investigation and the search for the accused is ongoing.

The incident has sparked outrage among local residents and the Dalit community, who are demanding strict action against the perpetrators. Authorities are now under pressure to ensure swift justice for the victims’ family.
