A violent clash broke out at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Thursday evening during the Durga Visarjan procession. The incident took place near Sabarmati T-Point, where tensions escalated between different student groups.
JNUSU President Nitish Kumar said that earlier in the day, a poster was circulated depicting jailed students Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam as Ravan. “In protest, other student groups staged demonstrations, and when the ABVP’s Durga Visarjan procession reached the spot, the situation went out of control,” he said.
Nitish Kumar alleged that ABVP members raised slogans like “Jai Shri Ram” and “Yogi ji’s bulldozer justice is here” during the procession. He added that they also began waving slippers, further inflaming the situation.
Meanwhile, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) accused left-wing student organizations such as AISA, SFI, and DSF of attacking their procession. ABVP claimed that stones were pelted at students and female students were targeted. “This is not just violence, but an assault on our traditions,” the group said.
Following the incident, tension remains high across the university campus. The JNU administration has not yet issued any official statement. Student groups have demanded an impartial investigation into the matter.
This incident highlights the continuing political and communal tensions at JNU, affecting the university’s academic environment.
