Attacks on religious minorities and incidents of hate speech in India continue to rise sharply. According to a new report by the Association for Protection of Civil Rights (APCR), between June and August 2025, the country recorded 141 hate crimes and 102 cases of hate speech.
The report stated, “Mob violence, intimidation, and attacks on places of worship are no longer exceptions but have become routine.” The organization warned that this trend is not only threatening the immediate safety of minority communities but is also preventing them from freely practicing their faith.
State-wise figures:
Uttar Pradesh: 36 cases
Chhattisgarh: 17 cases
Maharashtra: 14 cases
The incidents included 41 physical assaults, 31 attacks on property, and 19 attacks on religious sites such as mosques, churches, and shrines. During this period, seven Muslims were killed in mob violence.
In the same three months, 102 instances of hate speech were documented, most of them targeting minorities. According to the report, such statements directly fuel social tension and violence.
Human rights activists have expressed concern that hate is increasingly being normalized in the country. They cautioned that if the government and authorities fail to take strict and immediate action, the damage to social harmony and the democratic framework could be severe.
The APCR report makes it clear that religious minorities in India are feeling increasingly unsafe. The 141 hate crimes and 102 hate speech incidents in just three months are not mere statistics, but a stark reflection of a growing crisis that threatens the very foundations of equality and trust in society.
