On September 15, two Christian citizens, Harjeet and Sunita Masih, were arrested in Sitapur district, Uttar Pradesh, for allegedly carrying out illegal religious conversions. According to police, the accused lured people into conversion under the pretext of curing illnesses and through other inducements. A large quantity of religious literature was also recovered from their possession.
Sitapur Superintendent of Police Rajesh Dwivedi stated that similar cases have been reported in recent weeks in Siddhauli and Nigoha, where individuals linked to Christian missionary activities were taken into custody. He further noted that previous investigations had uncovered evidence of financial support from various trusts, though no further action had been taken in those cases.
To conduct a thorough investigation, the police have constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT). The SIT will monitor the accused’s activities, assess the number of conversions carried out, and scrutinize their financial sources. The SP added that he would personally review the SIT’s progress on a weekly basis.
Earlier, in July, five individuals, including a priest, were arrested in Rampur Mathna Munrwapurva village for allegedly using funds received from Chennai to induce local residents to convert. Religious literature and other materials were seized, and the investigation of their bank accounts is ongoing.
Amid a rise in illegal conversion cases in Uttar Pradesh, police authorities have heightened vigilance and are investigating such cases with strict scrutiny.
