Mohammed Nizamuddin, a 29-year-old software engineer from Mahbubnagar district in Telangana, was shot dead by police in Santa Clara, California, on September 3. According to authorities, Nizamuddin was allegedly attacking his roommate with a knife and ignored repeated warnings from officers, prompting police to open fire in self-defense.
However, Nizamuddin’s family has described the incident as an act of racial discrimination and excessive police force. They claim that Mohammed faced racial harassment and workplace discrimination during his time in the United States.
In a LinkedIn post, Nizamuddin had written about experiencing racial hatred, harassment, wage fraud, and unfair dismissal. He alleged that he faced persistent discrimination and mistreatment while working at Google and during his employment through EPAM Systems.
Nizamuddin’s father, Mohammed Hasanuddin, has appealed to India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and the Chief Minister of Telangana to facilitate the return of his son’s body to Mahbubnagar and ensure a fair investigation into the case. The Consulate General of India in San Francisco has also reached out to the family, assuring all possible consular assistance.
Santa Clara Police Chief Corey Morgan stated that officers fired at Nizamuddin when he was near his roommate with a knife and did not comply with repeated warnings.
Experts say the incident raises serious questions about racial discrimination, workplace harassment, and police conduct. The family and the community are demanding justice and calling for an impartial investigation into the case.
